Thanksgiving Collective 2012: Modern Salon

November 24 ‐ January 24, 2013

Tripoli Gallery is pleased to announce the eighth annual Thanksgiving Collective exhibition entitled Thanksgiving Collective 2012: Modern Salon. Curated by Tripoli Patterson, this exhibition will feature works by Linda K. Alpern, Ross Bleckner, Michael Chiarello, Darren Coffield, Lautaro Cuttica, Jameson Ellis, Eric Freeman, Félix Bonilla Gerena, Mary Heilmann, Heidi Hillenbrand, Judy Hudson, Angelbert Metoyer, Aakash Nihalani, Miles Partington, James de Pasquale, Matisse Patterson, Mason Saltarrelli, Enis Sefersah, Nathalie Shepherd, Bosco Sodi, Keith Sonnier, Nick Weber, Darius Yektai and Nico Yektai.

Having curated his first exhibition on the Thanksgiving weekend of 2005, Tripoli Patterson continues his annual tradition this Thanksgiving weekend with the eighth Thanksgiving Collective. What began as an exhibition to showcase young emerging artists of his generation who were unique in the their vision, led to a yearly succession of Thanksgiving group shows. The annual shows fortified the need for a permanent venue in which these artists could present their work year-round, thus inspiring the founding of Tripoli Gallery in Southampton in 2009.

The Thanksgiving Collective 2012: Modern Salon will include some of the most influential and promising contemporary artists of our time. By adopting the theme of the Salon, Tripoli Gallery will include the works of twenty-four artists. As a point of departure, the Salon-style forum challenges the now traditional manner of minimal hanging. This exhibition sets up a unique viewing experience by presenting a vast range of mediums and artistic approaches. Moreover, the exhibition will contribute to the rich context and artistic legacy of the East End with an aim to continue a dynamic artistic dialogue between several generations of contemporary artists.

Since its inception, a recurrent aspect of the Thanksgiving Collective has been dedicated to showcasing the talent that has been cultivated by the East End. Although a majority of the artists are connected to the local area, it is also important to introduce talents from the art community at large. This will be the first exhibition in an East End gallery for artists Aakash Nihalani, Heidi Hillenbrand and Darren Coffield. Nihalani comes from a street art background and was included in an artist in residency program at the de Kooning estate this past summer where the gallery became familiar with his work. He will create a site-specific geometric tape instillation to contribute to the show. Hillenbrand works out of the West, debuting her most recent series at Colorado University in Boulder at the honors BFA show where she received critical acclaim for her approach to a distinctly contemporary subject matter. Joining the show from London UK, Coffield will present several of his upside-down face paintings, some of which have been included in exhibitions in The National Portrait Gallery and The Courtauld Institute of Art in London.

The Exhibition will open with a reception for the artists on Saturday, November 24th from 5 to 8 pm at the Tripoli Gallery located at 30a Jobs Lane, Southampton, New York. For press inquiries or further information, please contact Madeline McLean, [email protected] or call 631.377.3715
