Landscapes of Bajura

Félix Bonilla Gerena

June 21 ‐ July 9, 2012

Tripoli Gallery is pleased to announce Puerto Rican based artist Félix Bonilla Gerena’s solo exhibition entitled Landscapes of Bajura, on view at 30A Jobs Lane in Southampton. This will be Gerena’s fourth solo show with the gallery for which he will present a rich array of both older works and his most recent paintings and mixed media compositions to date. Landscapes of Bajura will be on view through July 9.

Gerena’s works are striking in their masterful use of color and movement of line, as each canvas depicts one magnificent environment after another. La Bajuras, a word given by the locals of the area, is a utopian refuge at Jobos Beach, Puerto Rico. Tourists come from all over the world to enjoy the beach’s paradisiacal locale where the landscape’s colors seem brighter, the light purer and the sand like silk. This is a place that is intended for the fleeting visitor, and similar to Eden, it is to be enjoyed in small amounts, as overindulgence can be a trap from which one may never be freed.

Genera’s large mixed media paintings exhibit a carnivalesque landscape in which his personal meditations on acute social environments give way to cultural critique. His works evoke the sumptuous and heavenly nature specific to La Bajuras, with aspects of tantalizing folly, similar to classical Dionysian paintings. His works recall a deep art historical legacy in depicting this paradox between a utopic/dystopic dialectic in relation to identity.

Coupling critique with glorification, Genera meditates on his own inherently kindred connection with his homeland with an unparalleled contemporary language.  Gerena’s Landscapes of Bajura mirror the fanciful nature of this romantic, yet possibly unrealistic space, with a palpable grace and spirit. His sweeping brushstrokes and gestural layers of paint capture movement and light that contextualize not only his personal space but perhaps one that may exist within us all.

Born in Utuado, Puerto Rico in 1968, Felix Bonilla Gerena has exhibited extensively in Puerto Rico and internationally including the Museum of the Americas Miami, the Santo Domingo Museum of Modern Art of the Dominican Republic and in many other noteworthy group shows in Philadelphia, Guadalupe and various museums within the Caribbean. He has an ever-expanding collector base and is included in the private collection of The de Kooning Estate, the Museum of Modern Art Dominican Republic, the Museum of Art and History of Arecibo Puerto Rico, among many others.
